PROJECT A: IDENTIFYING 5 ELEMENTS

'The Image of the City (1960)', a book by Lynch, his most famous work. It is a 5 year study on how to observe and collect information of cities. He came out with five elements forming mental maps :
  • Edges - a boundary which separates two or more parts of the city
  • Nodes - focal point and intersections
  • Landmark - obvious and identifiable objects
  • Path - pathways for vehicle and human access
  • District - different divided sections in a city

PROJECT B: AN ILLUSTRATED ESSAY WITH A COGNITIVE MAPPING

The task of this project is to allow students to explore the entire site in more detail and to come out with an overall cognitive mapping of the selected urban spaces. The cognitive mapping consist of the 5 elements and is based on students memory, which makes everyone coming out with different and interesting thoughts. This projects allows students to not only identify the 5 elements but also on how it influences people's perception of the city.
Students have to submit an A3 size cognitive mapping and also an essay report explaining the cognitive mapping.
